Grade 6 & Matchplays
Grade 6 competitions are all one-day events in the TennisUK matchplays.com programme. As players in matchplay competitions are drawn against opponents of same or similar rating, they are suitable for all standards.
Grade 5 competitions take place at local clubs or are arranged by LTA county offices. Whilst they are open to players of all ages and abilities they are particularly suited to players who are new to competitive tennis. The reason being that many intermediate and advanced players will often participate in events with a higher grade in order to earn more LTA rankings points.
Grade 5 competitions also count for LTA RATINGS purposes.
Grade 4 competitions are local/county level events suitable for beginner and intermediate players. Competitions in this grade tend to take place over a period of 2-7 days, either at weekends or during school holiday periods.
Grade 3 competitions are intended for intermediate and advanced players. However, anyone is welcome to apply although players who are very new to competitive tennis may find the experience of competition at this level a little challenging.
Grade 2 tournaments are national level competitions intended for players of a national and county standard. Grade 2 competitions often take place over a period of 5-8 days with several age groups; usually including both singles and doubles events. There are very few tournaments in this grade and these competitions are always oversubscribed.
Grade 1 competitions are the highest level tournaments and are intended for national and international players.
What happens when tournaments are oversubscribed?
With exception of grade 6 competitions and mini-tennis events, if a tournament (or an individual event within a tournament) receives too many applications the selections are made based on merit.
This means that the higher rated players are selected first and therefore some lower rated players may not be accepted (or placed on a reserve list). Players of equal rating are split according to their LTA age-group RANKING.
